TMS salary survey results

01 Sep 2008
Ruby Gonzalez | Group Editor

MONEY talks.

In the inaugural TMS Asia Pacific (TMS) Salary Survey Results, released exclusively earlier this month to TravelWeekly, a high 71 percent of respondents answered “important” when they were asked how important was salary in accepting their position. It is not all money talks, however. Sixty-six percent cited career progression as “very important” while 43 percent rated the opportunities of career progression with their current employer/organisation as “fair”.

These are just some of the labour force market dynamics that current and future employers need to understand as the growth across Asia of tourism, travel and hospitality industries continue.

TMS salary survey results, released at the start of the current month, was based on an extensive and in-depth research into the industries’ latest salary and HR trends compiled from information collected from almost 1,000 respondents from more than 12 countries across Asia. It is meant to provide an insight into prevailing job market conditions and hiring practices in the Asia- Pacific region, according to TMS Asia-Pacific managing director, Andrew Chan.

Salary by position

“We are certainly anticipating exciting times ahead as regional economic conditions and new job opportunities propel the urgent need for ever more candidates with expertise, talent and specialised skills,” said Chan. TMS Asia Pacific specialises in travel, tourism and hospitality recruitment and HR services.

Chan identified developments attesting to the growth. Korea, India and China, are experiencing sustained and substantial growth in international arrivals. There is an emergence of households in Asia with higher disposable income, increased spending power and more leisure time. In Singapore, two ongoing integrated resort projects are spurring demand for labour.

The survey was based on information from respondents based in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries.

Based on respondents by location, the highest came from Singapore, which represented 41 percent., followed by China and Thailand, with 14 and 11 percent, respectively.

The respondents represented airlines, car rental, cruises, e-commerce IT, GDS, hospitality, MICE events, other, spa, tourism and wholesale.

By sector breakdown, 46 percent of the respondents came from the hospitality industry. Sixty percent of the respondents were male. Forty-four percent have been with their current employer for one year at the most. Thirty-seven said that in the past 12 months, they received zero to 12-percent salary increase. Sixteen percent said they received 10 percent or more salary increase in the past 12 months.
