An insight into travel agencies which have withstood the test of time

Asian Trails hit the ground running when it was established in 1999, and the momentum is still on. At the helm is Lutzi Matzig, who had been with Diethelm Travel Thailand for almost 30 years before moving on to establish Asian Trails in 1999 with senior partners Jacques Guichandut, Roger Haumueller and Laurent Kuenzle.01 Sep 2008

Managing Director Asian Trails

Thailand Ltd, Roger Haumueller,

touches on the high – and low – points

of the past nine years.

Success factor

We go for the extra mile! We have an excellent team of managers and staff who work beyond the call of duty to ensure that we deliver outstanding service to our clients

Making it

Before establishing Asian Trails, the management had already years of experience in Asia’s tourism Industry. When we started in 1999, we immediately had Kuoni Switzerland, France, Spain and Holland as well as Wettstein from Switzerland as our clients.

Most trying period

A big challenge for us in Thailand was the tsunami. It happened at our peak season and we knew that it would take several months to recover.

Overcoming the challenges

First, we had to evacuate all the clients affected by the tsunami. We then emphasised very much on updating our agents about the real situation since in many countries the coverage in the media was only focusing on breaking news. Initially we did daily reports from the different beach areas.

The months afterwards we did lots of promotions and went to many sales trips. We organised seminars to travel agents overseas and arranged lots of fam trips. Our message was always that the best way to help the affected local people it is to visit the destination.

Ultimate goal

To keep on delivering and outstanding service to our clients and increase our business share which will allow further expansions.
